Your Career and the Welsh Language

How do you feel when you see ‘Welsh Essential / Desirable’ on a job description?

“When I speak Welsh, I often worry I’ll be judged on how well I speak it”

You are not alone! 51% of the Welsh population who have some Welsh-speaking ability agree*.

Being a Welsh speaker, no matter what level:

  • Gives you a competitive advantage when applying for a job.
  • You will have an additional skill to include in your CV.
  • You also have more opportunities available for you.

This page will showcase the opportunities available to develop your Welsh language skills as well as the opportunities available.

Your Career and the Welsh Language

Would you like to develop your Welsh language skills and your confidence ready for a Welsh or bilingual career?

This year, USW is offering exciting new modules to prepare you for using your Welsh language skills in the workplace. They are available to all students in any year of study.

If you are interested in registering for these modules, please contact [email protected]

What do the modules include?

  • 1 hour live sessions will take place over the web for a period of 6 weeks, with supporting resources on Blackboard.
  • The modules will be assessed through a combination of oral and written tasks but most of these will be done within the sessions (you will have the choice to submit work in Welsh or English).
  • There is an emphasis on building confidence to use spoken Welsh and to write your work/assessments in Welsh, and your tutors will support you with this.

They are 5 credit modules in addition to the main course, so it will be an extra study to put on your CV.

I studied photography and graduated in 2017.

I now work in Comms for a medium-sized housing association that also delivers support to homeless people across South Wales.  My job was originally a graduate post but I have been able to extend this to a permanent position and it’s a role I feel really passionate about.

By planning for questions you’ll reduce anxiety. Seeing  ‘desirable’ was something that often put me off applying for jobs, but taking the time to research where you are applying makes all the difference. For example, if Welsh is desirable, learn how they use welsh and what is the expectation of the sector. This gives you the power to come up to solutions and discuss that at the interview. This helped position me ahead of others who applied for my job as I came across a solution-focused person rather than panicking when they inevitably ask. The same applied when I saw driving was essential … I researched where I work and found a bus stopped right outside the office… so said that in my interview.

I’ve been told that my solution-focused approach to the answers around welsh and driving was one of the reasons I stood out as a candidate and got the job.
