Summer Research Intern Scheme

Summer Research Intern Scheme.png

The Summer Research Intern Scheme offers promising USW undergraduates or postgraduates hands-on experience of research during the summer vacation, with the aim of encouraging them to consider further study and/or a career in research.

The scheme will be of interest to students with an interest in Criminology and/or Policing research and interns will be supervised by staff from these subjects. However, the scheme is not limited to students from these subjects - it is open to USW final year undergraduate and Masters students from Criminology, Policing and any related subjects (e.g. Law and Psychology) graduating in 2024 and beyond.

The successful applicant can expect to be involved in some or all the following activities:

  • Research bid writing (with the possible inclusion of the intern as a funded research assistant or student)
  • Drafting publications (with the possible inclusion of the intern as a co-author)
  • Literature searching/reviewing
  • Social media for research projects
  • Arranging events e.g. conferences, seminars
  • Involvement in fieldwork and data analysis is less likely owing to restrictions placed on who may access participants and data, but not impossible.

The supervisor is looking for an intern with:

  • A strong academic background in Criminology, Policing or a related discipline (at least achieved/predicted 2:1/merit)
  • An interest and ability in research methods and writing
  • Ability to work independently and show initiative

Successful applicants will be required to submit a report on their experience within two weeks of completing their internship.

Duration and renumeration

The placement can be 6 weeks full-time or longer if the internship is part-time. There is some flexibility over start date and individual supervisors and interns can arrange a mutually convenient start date to coincide with the summer vacation. Full-time interns will receive bursary of £217 per week for living expenses and part-time bursaries will be calculated on the number of days/hours agreed.
