Most large employers use aptitude tests (psychometrics) as part of their selection process. Simply put, if you fail to do well enough in them then you will be unlikely to progress.  

The tests employers use could be numerical, verbal, situational or case study based. 

To do your best in these tests you need to prepare well for them.  It is important to know what tests you will be doing, and to practise doing them so that you are familiar with them.
