"I knew I would be interested in pursuing a career with the NHS Legal Team after hearing about them in my second and third year; however after attending the Insight Day I was even more sure."
I first heard about NWSSP during an employer talk in my second year followed by a guest lecture given by Paul Veysey in my third year, where he described what a career in the NHS Legal Team would look like. After following NWSSP on social media, I heard about the opportunity to attend their Virtual Insight Day through LinkedIn.
During the day we had the opportunity to attend two of the following breakout sessions - Court of Protection, Clinical Negligence, Personal Injury, Commercial Law and Employment Law; I chose Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury. The experience required no extensive previous knowledge to attend the breakout sessions; although a basic foundational knowledge may be useful for your own understanding.
Both of the breakout sessions were led by paralegals in each area and were extremely informative and enjoyable, as we were able to complete realistic tasks that the team actually complete on a day to day basis.
The tasks
included, filling out a case plan using a number of real documents for the
Personal Injury breakout session, as well as having the opportunity to look at
and evaluate evidence that would be used in a Clinical Negligence case.
I knew I would be interested in pursuing a career with the NHS Legal Team after hearing about them in my second and third year; however after attending the Insight Day I was even more sure. I would highly recommend any students who are interested in the areas that NWSSP cover to attend one of their Insight Days, if not for the knowledge on how to pursue a career with them and an insight into the work they do, but for the experience.
My main tips for others looking to attend a Virtual Insight Day with NWSSP would be to follow them on as many social media platforms that you can and create job alerts for the company to be the first to hear about any work experience opportunities they may have. As well as that, prepare questions to ask the team and ensure that you are appropriately dressed for the occasion i.e. an outfit suitable for an interview.
