Knights Brown - Sandwich Placement

Why did you choose to do a placement; and why here?

I wanted an opportunity to trial the industry and get to know what options are available for a civil engineering graduate. Knights Brown has a great reputation as a company who support placements and graduates. The work they do is very varied and unique making the placement an interesting one.

Describe what you did on placement

Joseph, Knights Brown

I worked as a site engineer on numerous projects, this role included surveying, quality assurance, health, safety and environmental management and site supervision. The role is immensely reactive, so the responsibility was often all of this and more!

What did you work on?

Notable projects;

  • Short Term Operating Reserves (Sites in Manchester, Oldham, Liverpool, Port Talbot & Newport)
  • Battery Energy Storage System (London)
  • M4 maintenance (Junc 36-38)

What did you enjoy about it?

I enjoyed experiencing civil engineering on site & having the responsibility of an engineer. It set me up well for my final year of study having experienced a lot of what is taught.

What were the highlights; any particular achievements you want to shout about?

  • Being the sole engineer on the Battery Energy Storage System working with the site agent, contracts manager and quantity surveyor to successfully deliver one of the first Battery Energy Storage System’s in the UK.
  • Independently supervising night works on the M4 under full closure, coordinating 6 subcontractors and successfully completing all task ahead of programme.

What new skills and knowledge did you gain?

The key learning points for me were commercial and management skills; I also built on technical skills taught at university, gained 15 months’ worth of construction knowledge which I can apply to my final year of study.

How will this placement help your career?

The additional knowledge picked up before graduating will help with progression in the early stages of my career including my professional development with the Institution of Civil Engineers. Most notably, it has helped me choose the correct career path within civil engineering.

How did you find about the placement and how did you apply?

This placement was advertised within a seminar delivered by Knights Brown engineers.

How do you feel returning back to USW after the placement?

The knowledge I have gained through this experience has allowed me to deliver better work in my final year including improved presenting, a key aspect in final year.
