Celtic Manor Hotel - 10 Week Internship
Esther Zee Wong is a second year BA (Hons) Hotel and Hospitality Management student from Brunei. Esther is currently undertaking a supervisory role at the Celtic Manor Resort for her work-based learning.
The Hotel and Hospitality Management course offers the ideal balance between theory and practice. The work-based learning opportunity at the Celtic Manor Resort has been incredible. I’ve had exposure to the resort’s different functions. Through my studies, I’ve positioned myself for a wide range of careers in industry. These include hotel management, event planning and co-ordinating conferences and banquets.
The course is structured so that in the first year, you learn the operational requirements of working for a hotel. The second year is where you undertake a supervisory role in the workplace. I’m currently based in housekeeping, where I plan and manage tasks within the department. I also ensure the high standards required of a five-star hotel are met. In the third and final year, I’ll have responsibility for managing an event at the resort. It’s something I very much look forward to.
Since starting the course I’ve grown in confidence, enhanced the way I communicate and I’ve also improved my time management and multi-tasking skills. There is so much more I have to learn and develop, but I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead (especially the placement I’ll be undertaking later this year, at Campus Living Villages). The course is intense, but completely rewarding and fulfilling. It helps to shape your career aspirations, as you have the chance to explore the opportunities available to you in the hospitality industry.”
