"The opportunity to see and experience the law, in practice, in my local area and understand its impact was engaging and inspiring and has certainly opened my mind to the possibility of a career in local or national government."
“I spent a week on placement in the legal department of Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council. I am grateful for the invaluable practical experience of working with legal professionals who have a diverse knowledge of the law. The team was friendly, supportive and had a great sense of humour, which enhanced my experience.
For a week surrounded by uncertainty due to the global pandemic, Simon and the team went above and beyond to organise practical work for me to complete remotely. The placement consisted of receiving legal questions and issues, researching them and drafting a response. The legal questions and issues were wide-ranging and concerned matters such as Penalty Charge Notices, the Community Infrastructure Levy, an Experimental Order, Certificate of Lawfulness, insurance, and planning permission for a major development. Alongside researching and answering questions, I attended a planning committee and licensing meeting to observe. I also travelled to a planned development site with the relevant authorities looking for concerns and issues that may affect the development.
This week gave me an insight into local government practice, which opened my mind to the possibility of a career in local or national government. The opportunity to see and experience the law, in practice, in places known to me, where I could see and understand its impact was engaging and inspiring. It has renewed my motivation to work hard and achieve my goals of practising as a legal professional. I received positive feedback throughout, and I am confident that was because of my in-house virtual placement week at Coburn & Rees Conveyancing, where I was able to develop key skills before my placement. As a result, I feel that I am more focused and driven than ever.”
