We are Skills and Volunteering Cymru (SVC) and we believe in giving communities in South Wales the opportunity to give a little, and gain a lot. As our name suggests we are a volunteer-led charity offering volunteering opportunities in Cardiff, Rhondda Cynon Taf, The Vale of Glamorgan and Gwent and have been since the 1970s.
We are currently recruiting for a number of projects in the RCT area including:
Out and About Volunteer - The aim of the project is for volunteers to organise, plan and run different fun trips once a month for a group of adults with learning disabilities and/or mental health conditions, with the support of the Project Coordinator. Activities can include cinema, bowling, going out for food, you name it! There are two roles available for this project: Lead Volunteer and General Volunteer, with each role bringing a different set of skills that can be gained. Overall, the skills that can be gained from volunteering on this project include teamwork, interpersonal, communication, organisation, and project management. We’re looking for volunteers who can commit to this project once a month either on a weekday evening or on a weekend. No prior experience is needed for this volunteer role.
Coffee Morning Volunteer - Coffee Morning's are attended by adults with learning disabilities who like to come along for a chat and some coffee and biscuits. The participants also enjoy taking part in arts and crafts each week to start the session, which is followed by two rounds of bingo. The lead volunteer would be expected to come up with a different arts and crafts activity for each session and show the participants how to complete the task. The general volunteer would be expected to help the lead volunteer in planning for the session and helping out at the coffee morning by chatting to participants and making hot drinks for them. This session takes place in Garth Olwg Lifelong Learning Centre in Church village, running every other Tuesday from 12pm until 1pm.
Shiny Happy People Project Volunteer - We are currently looking for a volunteer to help out on our ‘You’ve Got a Friend’ project. This is a weekly event that takes place in Church Village which is for adults with learning disabilities to come along and have a sing and dance. Stef and Kate aka ‘Shiny Happy People’ lead the sessions each week, and we currently have two volunteers who come along to dance with the participants to make sure that everyone feels included. This sessions has boosted the confidence of both participants and volunteers, therefore the skills that can be gained include communication and team building as staff and volunteers work together to bring a community feel to the sessions. The sessions run every Wednesday from 11am until 12pm.
Come along to meet us and find out more.
