GO Wales Case Studies

Take a look through our case studies and get an idea what you can achieve through the GO Wales programme.

Stephen O’Shea is a first year Human Resource Management student at USW and a participant on the European Social Fund (ESF) funded GO Wales Achieve through Work Experience Programme which is for young students on higher education courses in Wales who are facing barriers in securing work experience.

Stephen O’Shea was pleased to be offered an opportunity in the HR Department at USW.

Stephen explains: “I am wholly very happy with the placement so far! I am enjoying the variety of work given, particularly where I am given a mixture of 'basic’ and 'complex’ tasks which means that I can carry out work where critical analysis and problem solving is required to improve my skills in these areas. I have also had the opportunity to improve my understanding of the processes more and I am happy that I have been able to look at certain procedures, rules and forms and see the rationale behind them. It gives me a particularly good feeling to be entrusted to do tasks such as this because these tasks are exactly what I would be doing when I do eventually find myself in a HR department.”

Says Lise Jacobsen, GO Wales Employability Adviser “Stephen’s placement is going really well and his supervisor is very impressed with his attitude and willingness to get stuck in.”

GO Wales has supported a number of other students into career focused work experience at organisations including Hijinx Theatre, Network Rail, Seren Books (Poetry Wales), British Transport Police, G39 and Cardiff Neighbourhood Policing Team.
If you take part in the Programme you will get the support of an adviser to help you decide what kind of work experience would work best for you, help to prepare for it, learn from it and decide on your next steps. This will improve your chances of securing sustainable employment, further training or education when you complete your course. You may be able to get help with travel costs and other costs so that work experience is an affordable option for you.

Abbie tells us about how she has benefited from doing the GO Wales programme in this short video.
